Running Challenge 2011

My New Year's resolutions in the past focused on nutrition (i.e. don't eat red meat) as well as other things to be healthier.  My resolution for 2011 continued the trend and self-challenge; however, it involved tracking my behavior and activities for later analysis.  In 2011, I set the goal to run (well, this includes walking, jogging, hiking, and just about any other means of pedestrian travel) a total of 2011 miles by the end of 2011.  The point is to understand the miles I put on my feet and analyze how active (or sedentary) I actually am throughout the year while setting a reasonable goal to keep myself motivated.

Here's my results:

Goal Complete.

As you can see, I crushed it!  I beat the goal and then some.  Yeah, I'm awesome.

Lessons Learned:

To save you from doing the arithmetic, I averaged slightly under 6 miles each day for an entire YEAR!  Yes, it helped that I competed in a couple half marathons and got a lot of miles with long hikes in the mountains.  However, what really helped boost my tally was setting a routine of walking to work for a round-trip total of 10k.  I view a long run/walk in a totally different light than I did in years past.  I enjoy to walk everywhere I go, so if the plan is to meet somewhere in SF, most likely I'll walk there.  I'm proud that I set a challenging goal and accomplished it.
